Finton Insights: An Introduction to Neurodiversity

An introduction to Neurodiversity was given at Trinity Chapel on 20th March to Finton Parents.

Did you know that 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent?

Neurodiversity is an umbrella term which describes the natural range of differences in human brain functioning including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and Tourette’s syndrome. With this in mind Miss Nicola Blenkinsopp, SENCo at Finton House, invited Louise Lawrence and Dr Rebecca Varrall to speak to parents over coffee at Trinity Chapel on Monday about Neurodiversity, with a particular focus on Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Louise and Rebecca talked about how the aim of the neurodiversity movement is to understand an individual’s unique skills and needs and to help leverage their strengths and access tools and resources so they can better navigate their world. They described the ways in which ASC and ADHD can present in children and adults and explained how support can be put in place for them and their wider network to help them to achieve their greatest potential in life.

“The world needs ‘out-of-the-box’ and innovative thinkers and Autism Unravelled have created resources and training so that we can all make reasonable adjustments to help neurodivergent individuals thrive.”

Thank you Miss Nicola for a very enlightening morning. We look forward to the next in this specialist series of talks.
