We recognise that the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) part of education for pupils is crucial to their development as an individual, allowing them to take their rightful place in the community as a local, national and global citizen. SMSC is about the values pupils are encouraged to hold, their attitude to learning, knowledge and society. The Finton Goals form the basis of whole school SMSC development for our pupils as the children are given opportunities to develop each of these qualities. The Finton Goals underpin SMSC priorities and Fundamental British Values throughout the school.
Fundamental British Values are promoted at Finton House in the following ways:
- Democracy
- Giving pupils a ‘Voice’ e.g. through our elected School Council
- Encouraging pupils to have an input into what and how they learn
- Offering a comprehensive and unprejudiced curriculum at Finton House that promotes Fundamental British Values
- Rule of Law
- Promoting respect for the school rules and understanding consequences
- Teaching values and reasons behind laws which are essential for their wellbeing and safety
- Facilitating healthy debate in class to encourage recognition of the importance of the law
- Mutual Respect & Tolerance of different Cultures and Religions
- Promoting respect as one of our Finton Goals
- Whole school celebrations e.g. International Day and Black History Month
- Throughout the year, assemblies are held focussing on bullying, with reference to prejudice-based bullying, and Anti bullying week is held
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs is supported by the RE and PSHE/RSE curriculum
- Individual Liberty
- Pupils are encouraged to make choices in a safe and nurturing environment, advised through online safety & PSHEE lessons, PSHEE workshops, participation in our clubs programme and House celebrations
