We are delighted to share that a group of former Year 6 pupils have won the primary 5-11 (group) category at the TES SEND Poetry Competition 2022!
Grace, Annabelle, Alexander, Florence, Rocco and Mathilda decided to enter the competition during Miss Susan’s creative writing club. The theme was ‘One world for everyone – building an inclusive future for SEND learners’, with pupils “invited to put pen to paper and transform their hopes and aspirations into a poem to help encourage an inclusive future for all children and young people, especially those with SEND”. The children gave the theme a lot of thought and brainstormed ideas and metaphors around it. Mathilda, who now attends Woldingham School, spotted that the word LEVEL was a palindrome and so their poem ‘Level’ was born.
The children were reunited this morning with Miss Susan and were presented their award by children’s author Michael Rosen. Miss Susan said: “To hear Michael Rosen reading our poem brought a tear to my eye. These children just instinctively ‘got’ the competition brief of ‘One world for Everyone’ – and I know this is because they have grown up in a truly inclusive school. I feel so proud of them all.”
