At the Table with Mr Alan, Finton’s Head Chef

This week our School Reporters, Krish and Sophia, sat down at the table with Mr Alan, Finton’s Head Chef.

This timely interview comes off the back of our recent 5 star inspection rating from the Environmental Health Office. Mr Alan and team have achieved a continuous 5 star rating over the last three consecutive inspections, giving them the official ‘Elite Status’.

What inspired you to become a chef in a school?

I’ve always liked working with my hands rather than in an office, and I have previously worked for larger hotels and restaurants… so wanted a new challenge.

What’s your favourite dish to make outside of work?

Lamb is my favourite – anything containing lamb is a win! I also love any kind of roast.

What’s your favourite cuisine to eat?

My favourite cuisine is Spanish (I love tapas and my brother lives in Spain, so I’ve eaten a lot of Spanish food in my time). I also like Greek food… but then I also like curry, Chinese, Italian, Thai… I could go on!

What are some of your favourite restaurants to go to? Do you like fast food?

My favourite restaurant is Ottolenghi’s, which I went to once and was such a nice experience. However I do LOVE fast food, McDonald’s is probably my favourite – although my favourite takeaway is kebabs.

What are your hobbies outside of cooking?

Golf, strictly golf! Cars too. I love motor racing and fast cars. I’m a Mercedes fan, but not Hamilton – more of a Russell fan.

What dish reminds you of your childhood?

Chocolate cake (I used to have a lot in school with chocolate custard) and shepherd’s pie is what we had a lot of at home.
