Prize Day concluded an eventful Autumn Term at Finton! As well as the traditional awarding of prizes, we were treated to a performance by the Year 3 choir, who sang ”’Holly and Mistletoe'” in front of Upper School. After the announcement of this term’s house trophy winners, Mr Ben directed a special thank-you to all staff for a successful term, and congratulated the children on their achievements. As always, it was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the children’s progress and reward exemplary behaviour! Our Head Boy and Girl, Isabel B. and George F. left us with the following message:

“Well done to all those who won an award today. If you haven’t, KEEP WORKING HARD! The teachers know you are all trying your best. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

Year 1-3 children impressed the audience with a fantastic carol concert on Thursday. Their enthusiasm was infectious and their performing skills top-notch. It was a pleasure to watch them having fun on stage and it was clear that they thoroughly enjoyed it themselves. What a wonderful celebration to end the term!

Also many heartfelt congratulations to all the children and teachers involved in the Upper School Carol Service this year. This was a particularly notable occasion in which the choir sounded outstandingly beautiful.

“Yesterday, the whole of the Upper School had a Christmas carol concert. It was amazing! Although a bit nerve-wracking because we had to stand up in front of so many people, it was a great experience for us all. I would like to thank Miss Maria and Miss Emma for helping us rehearse and also Mr Steve, Mr Jamie and Mr Harry who set up the stage. We are all sad this will be Year 6’s last carol concert!”

“The expression on children’s faces is all it takes to make Christmas a magical time of the year!” Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 were taken by surprise on Wednesday morning as Santa appeared in their classroom after a very long ride from the North Pole. Santa told the children about his busy schedule this Christmas and was delighted when the children offered to leave out some mince pies for him and carrots for the reindeer.

In the meantime, Upper School had a fantastic time in the playground. Thanks must go to Miss Lucy for organising the event and to our amazing parent elves for not only decorating the playground beautifully but also setting up fun games for the children. They loved it!

But the Christmas activities did not stop there, next the Christmas lunch and panto were on the busy Wednesday schedule. Barnaby K., School Reporter writes: “On Wednesday 12th November, the staff performed an excellent rendition of ‘Pinocchetta’. Mr Paul, who wrote it, also performed as an evil puppet-master. Also the lunch staff put together an amazing Christmas Lunch, with pigs-in-blankets, turkey, carrots, gravy, parsnips and everyone’s favourite: sprouts!”

In aid of the Rainbow Trust

One of the most cheerful mornings at Finton must be the Thomson House Crazy Hair Day! It was fantastic to see the children arrive at school with bright, colourful hair which definitely attracted some attention in the neighbouring streets.

After all the early morning excitement, Upper School children were quickly ushered inside to attend their usual Friday assembly. (We have never seen a more colourful assembly at Finton!)

A big thank you to our Year 6 House Captains, Miss PJ and Miss Anna for a fabulous organisation of another fun Crazy Hair Day!

Our family open morning is the ideal way to find out more about our school. Whether your child is joining this year or is still too small to notice much, do come and have a look round, meet the Headmaster, staff and pupils and see why Finton House is one of the most sought after schools in South West London.

On Saturday 29 September we are holding an “open house” from 10am until 12 noon. There is no need to sign up in advance as we will ask for your details on arrival. Current parents and senior pupils will be offering tours of classrooms and facilities and there will be refreshments available as well as activities for little ones. The Headmaster will give a speech in the Hall at 10.15 and again at 11.15am.

Free Places at Finton House

25th June 18

Year 6 produced some highly amusing and dramatic moments in their performance of Camelot.

The children have been working extremely hard on their rehearsals, and all their efforts have been rewarded. Everyone agreed that their singing, acting and dancing was on par with Broadway! The cast left their audience in awe at this tremendous achievement. Well done to Year 6 and their fabulous teachers for an amazing show.

14th June 18

We would like to congratulate all six girls who qualified to participate in the IAPS National Swimming Finals 2018. Over 5,000 children had tried to qualify for finals day and only the top 20 swimmers in each age group in every stroke were invited back. Finton House School was represented by a team of one Year 6 and five Year 5 children who all swam incredibly well on the day. With over 3000 spectators at the Aquatic Centre, the excitement and atmosphere was infectious as the girls got prepared for their races!

Issy, our Year 6 record swimmer, qualified for the 50metres backstroke and impressed us with a new personal best time. The standard of the races were so high this year that Issy just missed the podium, but she still achieved an incredible 5th place. We also had 3 individual qualifiers: India (25 metres backstroke), Sophia (25metre freestyle) and Emily (25 metres breaststroke). Well done to Emily who finished her race as 9th in the country. India and Emily made it through to the final where India produced an amazing swim with a new school record of 17.25 (just beating Issy’s silver medal performance last year of 17.35). The Finton crowd cheered excitedly when it was announced that India won the silver medal. What an achievement!

The U10 medley relay team consisting of Freya, Emily, India and Sophia just missed out on the medals finishing 5th in the country. In the freestyle relay the team comprising of Hannah, India, Emily and Sophia stormed into the lead going into the last leg and incredibly Sophia managed to hang on a couple of hundredths of seconds. GOLD MEDAL for the mighty Finton – which makes these girls the Number 1 under 10 freestyle relay prep swimming team in the country!

What a brilliant performance by all our individual swimmers and teams! We are very proud of them all.

We would like to thank our supporters on the day who came down to the Aquatic Centre to cheer our girls on. The children really appreciated seeing so many teachers there to support them.

Thank you must also go to our PE Department and all supporting staff who did an exceptional job in preparing the competitors for the finals and helping out on the day.

Finton House School were tasked with a challenging space mission on their STEM Day recently. The children arrived at school in the morning to discover a crashed spaceship in the playground which had appeared overnight. This rapidly fuelled some early morning speculation as to what may have happened.

The children were then quickly ushered into assembly where a newsflash told them that an alien had apparently crash-landed at Finton House. A few CCTV clips showed the alien in various parts of the school, including sitting at the Headmaster’s desk. As the assembly continued there was sudden uproar as the alien walked past the window behind the presenter. Clearly something had to be done.

Throughout the day, children completed various problem-solving activities (relating to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to return the alien to its home planet. Our young engineers in Year 1 helped the alien by designing their own rockets and making straw rockets with fins to give them stability. Working in teams, Years 5 and 6 used Spheros (controlled by the iPad) to calculate and programme a route through a giant map of the universe back to the alien’s home.

Everyone visited the giant Science Dome, which was like a planetarium, to see footage of the space station, enjoy a journey to each planet and even a rollercoaster ride through the rocks and ice of Saturn’s rings. “It was totally awesome” reported one Year 3 pupil.

Another highlight of the day was the self-built rockets launching in the playground. To the amusement of the children, one of the rockets was so well built that it landed on the School’s roof.

At one point in the afternoon, a UFO was spotted in the sky: “Perhaps that’s the alien’s friend coming to rescue him”, cried the children in Year 1.

It was a very memorable day filled with valuable hands-on learning experiences, engaging the whole school and every member of staff!

Ben Freeman, Headmaster of Finton House, said: ‘there’s nothing like this kind of immersive learning to trigger massive enthusiasm for a whole range of subjects. It takes a great deal of planning and resource, but the dividends are incalculable.’
