Finton House actively recruits and welcomes children with Special Needs as well as those experiencing difficulty with some aspects of their learning or development.

    The application process for all children is the same, and places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Siblings of children already at the school are given priority. Parents are asked to disclose as early as possible any information about their child's early development which might lead to the need for additional support at school. Following disclosure of any medical condition, allergy, learning difficulty, disability or emotional/social difficulty, and once an offer of a definite place has been made, the school will need to ensure that the child's needs can be met, using the following criteria:

    • Whether the child will be able to access the mainstream curriculum and inclusive environment at the school.
    • Whether the school has the skills, knowledge, facilities and resources to meet the child's needs.
    • Whether any adjustments are required to accommodate the child in the school, and if so whether these are reasonable for the school to put in place.
    • Whether the child's attendance would be incompatible with the efficient education of others and detrimentally affect their good progress.

    This will be achieved through: a meeting with parents and tour of the school, sharing of all specialist reports relating to the child, a visit to the child at home or in his/her nursery setting, and if necessary an assessment by an Educational Psychologist or other professional. The school will meet the cost of any assessment undertaken.

    If there is evidence that the school is not able to provide a suitable setting for the child, then a meeting will be held with parents to explain the situation and to make clear the reasons why the offer of a place is being withdrawn. This will be followed up in writing and any deposit that has been paid will be refunded.

    Throughout this process the school will have regard to the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2001 and the Disability Discrimination Act Code of Practice for Schools 2002.
